JESSIE Watkins’ wish for the past two-and-a-half years will be granted tomorrow when she meets her idol Johnny Depp in Los Angeles.
Jessie, 10, of Highfields, has been fighting medical battles since she was diagnosed with auto-immune hepatitis at 15 months of age.
She received a life-saving liver transplant in March, 2008, after spending more than 600 days on the transplant waiting list, missing out on a normal life as she was wheelchair-bound and tube-fed through her nose.
Grandmother Marie Watkins said it was a dream come true.
“Jessie’s been very tired lately, but since she got the news her eyes have just been sparkling,” Mrs Watkins said.
The family had their bags packed for two days before they received confirmation from Johnny Depp’s representatives at 11am yesterday.
They flew out of the country last night. She will be one of 12 sick children meeting Johnny.
Mrs Watkins said Jessie made her wish to the Make-A-Wish foundation in 2007.
“They’ve contacted her more than once and said this might not come to pass and asked if she wanted to change her wish. But she just dug her heels in and said no.
“I asked her, ‘why are you so hung up on seeing him?’
“She said, ‘he just makes me laugh — and he’s very cute’.”
Mrs Watkins is looking after the pets while they are away, including Jessie’s budgie “Jack Sparrow”.
